On this day in 1865 On this day, enslaved African Americans in Texas learned that they are free and that slavery ended two years ago. Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. It is observed annually on 19 June. It is also called Emancipation Day, or Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day.
