Unravelling the symbolism in Childish Gambino’s “This is America”

Childish Gambino’s “This is America” immediately captured global attention upon its release, opening up conversations around race, gun violence, and social issues in contemporary America. Donald Glover, famously known as Childish Gambino, revolutionised how music engages with difficult topics. The song and provocative video have since been the subject of much debate and analysis. This article will explore its various layers of artistic expression to fully comprehend its symbolism.

The violent opening act

The video begins with Glover’s erratic and exaggerated movements, suggesting an underlying mental instability within society. It gives a lighthearted impression until he suddenly shoots a man tied to a chair with a bag over his head. The simultaneously shocking and disorienting act jolts viewers out of their complacency as they recognise the startling levels of everyday violence present in America.

Gun care over human life

Following each act of brutality in “This is America,” viewers witness the careful treatment of guns as they are gently wrapped in cloth or passed off to be kept safe. In contrast, the lifeless bodies are carelessly dragged away or left to rot. This stark difference in handling highlights the irony in American society that often places more value on firearms than human lives.

Choir scene

The choir represents unity among people who share common beliefs and values – a valuable aspect of community life. However, Glover abruptly introduces chaos by spraying bullets into the crowd. By doing so, he raises questions about the vulnerability of modern America’s communities and addresses how prevalent mass shootings have become.

This scene also serves as a reminder of the murder of nine people in a church in Charleston.

Stereotyping utilised

Glover performs various dances throughout the video alongside a group of traditional African American dance styles wearing school uniforms. These moves, like the Gwara Gwara, highlight African heritage while juxtaposing the ongoing chaos in the background. The viewer’s attention is likely to be drawn to the dance moves rather than the hidden turmoil—a commentary on how society often prioritises superficial elements instead of facing the matter at hand.

Running away from the chaos

Towards the end of the video, Glover is shown fleeing from an angry mob with an expression of sheer terror – a symbol of black Americans’ struggle to escape societal issues that continually affect and haunt them. Simultaneously, it also represents an earnest attempt to run from one’s past or even one’s identity in the face of adversity.

Conclusion

Childish Gambino’s “This is America” seamlessly incorporates various symbols to address complex issues surrounding contemporary American society. These issues include racism, gun violence, and stereotypes—skillfully displayed throughout the video’s intricate intricacies. Glover’s thought-provoking piece sets the stage for important conversations and allows viewers to engage critically with modern socio-political dilemmas in the United States.
