Popstar Lizzo will be the subject of a new documentary coming to HBO Max later this year.

Lizzo announced the project at Warner Bros. Discovery Upfront in New York.

Directed by Doug Pray (exec producer of HBO’s The Defiant Ones), the documentary follows Lizzo’s meteoric rise to fame from her humble beginnings. Her success, love, and international stardom are explored through an intimate look at the moments that shaped her.

Lizzo has been busy. Her Amazon series – for which she signed a first-look deal in 2020 – Watch Out For The Big Grrrls debuted in March. In April, she released a new song, About Damn Time, the first single since releasing Rumours (featuring Cardi B) last year. She also pulled double duty as host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live in the same month, where she premiered her new single.

The Grammy-winning artist said, “Growing up, I never dreamed I’d get to experience all of the things I’ve accomplished in my life, and I’m just getting started. I’m so excited that I get to share and relive my journey with my fans and HBO Max. From ‘Cuz I Love You’ to my dramatic world tour, losing and gaining love, and creating my new album ‘Special,’ you all get to see the amount of time, patience, blood, sweat and tears that went into this process. It takes ten years to become an ‘overnight success,’ and hopefully, I can inspire other young creatives to keep going.”

Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content for HBO Max, added, “To get the chance to work with someone we have admired and adored for so long is a dream come true. Lizzo’s formidable talent has entertained and inspired millions, and we are ecstatic to help share her incredible journey.”

This week Lizzo also performed a three-song set as part of YouTube’s Upfront event where they unveiled content from the Black Voices Fund. She gave credit to YouTube for getting her music discovered.

“YouTube has always been a home for me to share my music and own my voice,” Lizzo said. “Performing at YouTube‘s Brandcast alongside my fellow creators is a way to remind the industry that when an artist can truly be self-expressive, creativity mixes with authenticity in really profound ways.”
