Witness appeal after two commuters clash on east London train

Popular culture
1 May, 2014

An elderly man and a young man got into it as the District line train pulled into Aldgate East station around 9pm on Monday, 28 April.

British Transport Police have released a video of the incident in an appeal for more information. The video shows a man in his late 60s, wearing a red T-shirt, green hat and black coat, fighting with a younger man sitting next to him in a blue jacket, punching him twice in the head and in the groin.

The younger man at first plays it calm until he packs his iPad away after which he rains down blows on the older man, punching him several times in the head, before kicking him in the face.

The attack left the elderly man unconscious according to reports and a 68-year-old man from Newham was arrested on suspicion of common assault, resisting arrest and a public order offence.

Detective Constable Lawrence Murphy, who is leading the investigation, said: “A physical altercation occurred between two men which resulted in a fight which left a man requiring hospital treatment”.

“I urgently want to speak to the man [in blue] pictured, as I believe he will be able to greatly assist the investigation. If you recognise him, or were on board the train, please get in touch”.

‘Violence on the Tube is rare, but when it does happen, because of the confined spaces, it can be all the more shocking”.

Anyone with information is asked to contact British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40, or text 61016, quoting reference B4 of 29/04/2014. Information can also be passed to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
