Kony 2012 Cover the Night Campaign flops

Popular culture
23 April, 2012

That awkward moment when your viral campaign flops like poorly made souffle.

You remember the Kony 2012 video right? You know the one that went viral in March? Well we were all meant to do something on Friday night (20 April) to make Kony famous. I forgot, as did many people around the world.

The campaign aimed to cover “every city, on every block” around the world with images of Kony to pressure governments into finding the rebel leader. But the event’s poor turnout – not only in the UK but in Europe and America as well – left cities largely free of Kony’s image.

Within days of the video going viral a wave of criticism rose against the Kony 2012 film – by the Invisible Children group. Here at Shades of Black we were unimpressed by the of use of outdated facts as were many people who had been drawn to the campaign.

The public breakdown of Jason Russel – the star of the film and a Christian evangelist – also caused the movement to lose credibility.

On Twitter one tweet joked that Kony was so last month.
