How to throw a virtual party

When you have family spread across the globe, meeting up in person can be expensive. Not everyone can take regular trips to see family members. Thankfully we have the internet, so distance should no longer be an excuse for not celebrating the important days in our family’s and friends’ lives.

Here are some tips on hosting a virtual party.

Be my guest

No matter what the party is, guests can make or break it. As it’s a virtual event, keep the guest list small so that people can fit on screen. Ten people should be a good number to keep the conversation flowing. If there are too many guests, they will talk over one another, and you don’t want that.

Which platform will you use?

You need to figure out a few things, like the technology and the menu, to make these digital get-togethers just as fun as in-person ones.

There are many options available, so pick the one that works best for everyone. This could be Skype, Facetime, Zoom, or Houseparty. Before the dinner party, make sure your guests have plenty of time to download and familiarise themselves with the app. Houseparty is a popular app right now. You can participate in multiple video chats and play several games during calls, including Heads Up, Trivia, and Quick Draw.

What’s on the menu?

Food plays a big part in such gatherings. Get together with your guests over WhatsApp and decide what should be on the menu. If some of your guests aren’t good at cooking, you could choose to order a takeaway. Make sure it’s a cuisine you all agree on so that you can enjoy the shared experience. You could decide to cook the same dish using the same recipe to see how that turns out.

Don’t forget the alcohol.

Don’t forget the music

Don’t forget the tunes. After dinner, it would be fun to play some music. Create a playlist of tunes that you can all dance to, whether from Amazon, Apple or Spotify. Test your set-up with a friend on whichever platform you have chosen to make sure they can hear the music loud and clear.

Throwing a virtual party is probably less stressful than an in-person do; there’s less clearing up to do, and when your guests get tired, they can just click the leave button. The most important thing to do is have fun!
