Has Queen Latifah finally come out?

Popular culture
26 May, 2012

According to reports Queen Latifah has come out as gay.

The hip hop queen, has never openly acknowledged her sexual identity. Despite  being photographed vacationing with women rumored to be her romantic interests, she has never herself acknowledged her sexuality. Latifah served as host at the 2012 Long Beach Pride Festival and some of her statements are being interpreted as the star finally coming out of the closet.

The rapper/actress , whose sexuality has been the source of speculation for years, told the 10,000-strong crowd, “I’ve been waiting to do this for a long time.” She then went on to perform her hits “U.N.I.T.Y” and “Ladies First.”

It was Latifah’s first appearance at a gay pride event, and she said she was proud to be among “my people” for the evening. The Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride Festival is the fourth largest in the country, and the masses of mostly LGBT fans gave Latifah an enthusiastic welcome.

“Y’all my peeps,” she said to the LGBT community. “I love you!”

She also performed and shared some advice with the crowd.

“Keep your support system tight,” she said. “Thank you to all my favorite peep guests who came out to support me. I appreciate it. I love you so much. Hope you had a beautiful time.”

“Y’all be safe whatever y’all get into tonight,” she added. “Boys — strap it up. Ladies — strap it up.
