Writing as a hobby

Taking up writing as a hobby is an excellent way to find out if it’s something you want to do long-term.

If you want to be a writer, you need to enjoy writing. If you don’t enjoy it, odds are you will not put the time and effort into it to succeed. So if you’re a hobby writer, that’s ok. Write.

Writing every day isn’t something many people can ever commit to. Many authors do it, but it takes time to get into the habit. If writing every day isn’t something you can do, don’t feel bad about it; write when you can.

A hobby is for your enjoyment and should be something you can do as a pastime. It should be fun! The main reason people start to write is to get published, but if you are doing it to get published, you are doing it for the wrong reasons. It would help if you wanted to write for yourself, not for some publishing company.

Writers write because they love to. If a writer is only writing to make money, the writing will feel and read as a product. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t pursue money, just that you should enjoy the process whilst you are doing that.

Writing for yourself helps you create a sort of creative reservoir. Turning writing into a skill takes love. Love combines with talent, hard work, skill, drive and determination to make a complete writer.

Have fun with your writing

The best way to get into the writing habit is to inject some fun into the process. The easiest way to accomplish this is to think of yourself as a published author. It might sound a little grandiose when stated aloud, but when you start to view yourself in this way, you’ll see your work in print much more quickly.

You will fail a lot. You will wonder if it was all worth it if you should’ve got a real job instead. Do it when you feel like it, not when you feel like you should.

Don’t give up.
