Wentworth Miller comes out as gay and says no to Russia

Popular culture
22 August, 2013

Prison Break actor Wentworth Miller came out as gay and gave a polite but firm up-middle finger to an invitation to St Petersburg International Film Festival as a “guest of honour”.

According to Reuters Wentworth was invited to attend the Russian festival but turned it down because of Moscow’s new anti-gay laws. The actor posted a letter on the website for GLAAD – a group that monitors media representation of gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender people and issues.

In a bid to take Jamaica’s crown as the most homophobic place on earth, Russia introduced new laws in June that makes it illegal to give under-18s information about homosexuality. The law, which includes imposing fines on those holding gay pride rallies, has attracted international condemnation.

Miller, 41, wrote: “Thank you for your kind invitation. As someone who has enjoyed visiting Russia in the past and can also claim a degree of Russian ancestry, it would make me happy to say yes. However, as a gay man, I must decline,”

Miller wrote that he was “deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government,” and did not want to attend a festival in a country where “people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly.”

More power to your pen Wentworth! Sorry it the news breaks your hearts ladies but there are plenty more fish in the sea.
