Planning for the summer holidays

Popular culture
3 June, 2005

It’s that time of the year when people who can afford it are off on their holidays, the children are out of school and their boredom threshold has increased to unimaginable levels. Not everyone can afford to take their children on holiday and even if you can they will still be bored when they come back.

The summer holidays are also dreaded by many working parents who can’t take six weeks off to be with their children. Not being able to spend time with your kids can give you a bout of the guilts but if you stick to the quality over quantity rule, you’ll get through the holidays.

A day trip to the seaside or theme park can end up costing a lot of money, so it’s worth saving up for this treat well in advance. Here are some ideas to get you through the holidays.

Firstly you should check out your local library for information leaflets on playschemes in your area. Most playschemes run for at least 3 to 4 weeks and costs vary. If you are a working parent with limited annual leave a playscheme can be a lifesaver. The library should also have a list of summer activities for children ranging from nature walks to football training.

If you can’t swim now would be a good time to learn. Swimming is an inexpensive and fun way of spending time with your little ones. Also, consider a trip to the London Eye if you’re not afraid of heights.

Theme Parks can be expensive so consider visiting just one for the summer.

Legoland
If you have young children you could take them to Legoland for a day. Visit their site for opening times.

Alton Towers
Tire the kids out with a trip to Alton Towers.

Chessington World of Adventure
This is still a really fun place to go.

Thorpe Park
Another great Theme Park
