As we remember Trayvon Martin this week let’s spare a thought for the family of the dead teen, Jordan Davis who was shot dead at 17.
The man accused of shooting unarmed Jordan is 47-year-old software developer, Michael Dunn. His trial started this week and although the media and members of the public are not allowed to view jury selection, we should keep Jordan Davis in our thoughts.
Jordan Davis’ killing is similar to Travyon Martin’s in that his killer is using the Stand Your Ground law to justify the shooting.
The Dunn says he feared for his life when he opened fire on Davis and three other teenagers in a row at a Jacksonville petrol station on 23 November 2012.
Dunn and his fianceé, Rhonda Rouer, were in Jacksonville on the night of the shooting to attend a wedding when they stopped at a Gate petrol station to pick up a bottle of wine before returning to their hotel, authorities say.
They parked their Jetta next to the red Dodge Durango SUV containing Davis and his three friends – Tevin Thompson, Leland Brunson and Tommie Stornes – who were listening to rap music on their way home after shopping at Black Friday sales at a mall.
Dunn asked the teens to turn down the volume of the music, but, his attorney said, the teens turned up the volume, threatened Dunn and brandished a shotgun.
Authorities say Dunn grabbed a pistol from the glove compartment of his car and opened fire before driving away. Police said no weapon was found on the teens.
It will be interesting to see what the jury makes of this case. To our minds, it’s quite cut and dry; he shot at four unharmed teens, fatally killing one of them. Guilty.
